It brings back fond memories of the first summer my husband and I were married. We were employees at the YMCA of the Rockies, which meant we got to enjoy the whole summer out of the Texas heat and “on vacation.”
We both started out hiking weekly on our day off but I soon dropped by the wayside while he accomplished the much sought after goal of climbing Long’s Peak. That was a memorable goal. My housekeeping crew leader was there for her second year. We became life-long friends and still visit one another in Maine or Texas.
In 2007 her spouse joined the three of us former Y-emps to enjoy the week long reunion of former employees and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the YMCA of the Rockies. We shared a room and the good food and many of the activities that were planned for the occasion, leaving us with an even closer friendship and many more wonderful memories of one of God’s most delightful vacation spots in the world.
We are retiring in May and thinking about seeking summer employment at the Y-camp again but I don’t think either of us will try to climb Long’s Peak again.
Thank you YMCA of the Rockies! Working there was a wonderful way to start a marriage that has lasted 53 years.
